Default Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Jack Morris and Alan Trammell who were elected to the Hall of Fame today as part of the Modern-era Committee.

Here's info from Barry Bloom on the process.

Quote:
How were the nominees on the Modern Era Ballot decided?

The ballot was composed by the BBWAA's Historical Overview Committee, an 11-member panel of veteran writers and historians.

Who votes on the ballot?

Each year's Committee is different and is selected by the Hall Board of Directors. This year's panel includes six Hall of Fame players: George Brett, Rod Carew, Dennis Eckersley, Don Sutton, Dave Winfield and Robin Yount in addition to Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox and Hall of Fame executive John Schuerholz, both of the Braves. Mets GM Sandy Alderson, former Blue Jays President Paul Beeston, Reds President Bob Castellini, Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt, Royals chairman David Glass, veteran BBWAA members Bob Elliott and Jayson Stark and historian Steve Hirdt of the Elias Sport Bureau make up the remainder of the group.

How do they decide?

The 16 members, a group that played or worked during that era, are provided in advance of the Sunday morning meeting with basic materials about the candidates and members of the committee hold multiple discussions on each candidate.

How is the vote determined?

The 16 members of the Committee can vote for a maximum of four of the 10 candidates. As in any Hall of Fame vote, a candidate needs to appear on 75 percent of the ballots cast to be elected. In this case, his name must appear on at least 12 of the 16 ballots. The process is difficult. A maximum of five of the 10 candidates could be elected. When the meeting concludes, each are given a ballot. Individual votes are private although the Hall announces a compiled tally.

Here's the history of what the Modern-era Committee is and how it came to be.
Quote:
On July 23, 2016, the Hall of Fame announced changes to the Era Committee system. Highlighting these changes is a restructuring of the time frames to be considered with a much greater emphasis on modern eras. Additionally those Major League players, Managers, Umpires and Executives who excelled before 1950 as well Negro Leagues stars will still have an opportunity to have their careers reviewed but with less frequency.

Separate 16-member subcommittees will continue to vote on individuals from different eras of baseball, with candidates still being classified by the time-periods that cover their greatest contributions:

Early Baseball (1871–1949)
Golden Days (1950–1969)
Modern Baseball (1970–1987)
Today's Game (1988 and later)

All committees' ballots will include ten candidates. Whilst there was previously a one-year waiting period after elimination from annual BBWAA consideration, there will now be no waiting period. The Today's Game and Modern Baseball committees will convene twice every 5 years, the Golden Days committee once every 5 years, and the Early Baseball committee once every 10 years.

Eras considered for yearly election are as follows:

Today's Game – 2016, 2018, 2021, 2023
Modern Baseball – 2017, 2019, 2022, 2024
Golden Days – 2020, 2025
Early Baseball – 2020, 2030

Additionally, the Hall of Fame has modified the criteria for which active executives can be considered for induction. All active executives age 70 or older may now have their careers reviewed as part of the Era Committee balloting process, regardless of the position they hold in an organization, and regardless of whether their body of work has been completed. Previously, active executives 65 years or older were eligible for consideration

Default Re: Hall of Fame

After what I have heard about Major League Baseball, no one should be elected into the Baseball Hall Of Fame, these days.
