yup that he was technically it was the ultimate sacrifice it's a pretty sad scene since he orders the current Red Ranger to kill himself (him as in Zordon) because shattering the tube he was in would've unleashed a huge energy pool that would've destroyed most of the villains but the ones who were human were purified.
