The Problem With Ty

Tyzonne arrived on Operation Overdrive  as a muli-layered character. He was a of course  just some random monster forced to work with Moltar. But he ended up being an alien cursed to an ugly form by the evil villain. But once Tyzonne was returned to normal, he was reluctant to join the team. He seemed to have some sort of secret and a mission of some sort.

When we next saw Tyzonne, he was clearly a friend of the Rangers. But seemed to still be holding something back. And didn't feel comfortable fully fighting with the team. Even rejecting a morpher that Andrew specifically made for him. Of course we soon learned that Tyzonne had lost his rescue team when they tried to save the Fearcats by his own orders. Only for them to be killed by the  villians.  Tyzonne's mission was to stop the Fearcats. He didn't want to jion the Rangers, due to  the blame he placed on himself for losing his own team.

So there you have it. Tyzonne was a multi layerd character. Someone who was experianced deep emotional turmoil . The very deffinition of a conflicted character. We knew he was a good person, yet had something dark wavering on his soul. Tyzonne was shaping up to be a very good Sixth Ranger  at this point.

Of course, Tyzonne eventually came around and jioned the team. In what was a pretty special moment, givening the four episode build up. A complete anti-thesis to the build up of someone like  SPD's Omega Ranger. And more patient then the build to Daggeron, which consisted of two episodes.

Unfortunately, since he jioned the team things have changed. Tyzonne has become a cookie cutter character. Now that he has seemingly overcome his personal demons he doesn't bring anything interesting to the table. He just seems to be there for no reason, half the time.

Its been several episodes since  Tyzonne jioned the team. And in each of them he has really failed to stand out. " Behind the Scenes" saw him  as part of a lame plot, invovling a medal that rendered him out of action. Which would have been fine, but it had no build up. And simply just led to the medal being removed and him helping the team in battle. Wih new zords to piolet.

Then we saw " Just Like Me". Which was the closest Tyzonne came to standing out. It was a decent way of exploring how an alien fits in on Earth. But was not exploited to its fullest. And really just led to some good natured comedy. It did nothing to make Tyzonne an interesting character like he started out as.

"Its Hammer Time" had very little of Tyzonne featured prominately. Except in a background capacity. "Out of Luck " rings the same. As he merely gave Mack a luckly plant. Tyzonne was obviously overshadowed in "Once a Ranger."

So the past several episodes have shown. Tyzonne to be a somewhat awkard (and goofy) background character. That shows no purpose other then tho show up with fancey new zords and add some alien themed comedy. Which is all well and good. But what happrned to the conflicted Tyzonne forced to serve Moltar? What happened to the Tyzone trying to evenge his team? What happented to  the Tyzonne  that wanted to jion the Rangers, yet felt asshamed of his failure to save his former teammates? Why is he no longer determined to defeat th Fearcats? Why has be become just some happy go lucky Ranger with no real personality? It really is a shame. When Tyzonne offocially jioned the team, I felt him to be one of the more interesting Sixth Rangers since Trent. Yet he seems to have been just a flash in the pan. And is almost sinking to the levels of Omega Ranger, which is pretty hard  considering Omega didn't have a human form.

The good news is that there is plenty of Operation Overdrive to go. There is still a chance Tyzonne will  stand out again. And perhaps regain the depth that his characrtization has lost. We can only hope that by the end of the season, we can say that Tyzonne was a multi-layered character yet again.
