With Sailor Moon Crystal showing us a more manga like adaption than the original anime its interesting to not Rei's character changes.

In the manga Rei is much like she is in Crystal. She is very quiet and soft spoken yet very loyal to her friends. As well as resolute when it came to fighting against evil. Rei doesnt seem to trust men very much ( the manga story Casablanca explains why). Rei views the senshi as kindred spirits and is very loyal to Sailor Moon.

In the anime Rei still stands steadfast against evil but is far more loud spoken. To the point that she develops a rivalery with Usagi early on that never happens in the original anime. She also clearly does not have a mistrust of men. Since she clearly is interested in Tuxedo Mask and Mamoru in the beginning. She is very foward when she tries to date Mamoru. But by the end of the first season we can see Rei is still very loyal to Usagi and perhaps believes in her the most. She just isnt afraid to tell her of her short commings. Yet we see her constantly defend Usagi when she isnt around. So she isnt so different in that regard.

I agree. Rei is more hot headed in the anime to reflect her fiery powers.

I recently read on a Sailor Moon Wiki that it was a producers desicion to change Rei's personality. The original anime actually changed quite a few thinks from the manga and Nako's vision.
